MAASTRICHT PUB CRAWL

MAASTRICHT PUB CRAWL

Maastricht is one of the most unique cities in the Netherlands. Even Dutch people from the northern parts of the country often feel as though they have travelled abroad when visiting. When you explore the city, you will notice that the architecture is indeed very different from what you would find in cities like Amsterdam or Haarlem. In the heart of the city, you will find the beautiful Vrijthof square, where both the Basilica of Saint Servatius and Saint John’s Church are located. Saint John’s Church is visible from afar thanks to its enormous red tower. Red is not the most common colour for a church tower, but it was painted this way to protect it from rough weather conditions. In addition to its beautiful architecture and cosy atmosphere, Maastricht is also known for a famous musician who was born in the city: the renowned violinist André Rieu. André Rieu is celebrated all around the globe, and the people of Maastricht are proud to call him one of their own. Once a year, he performs on Vrijthof square, drawing an audience from across the city. All in all, Maastricht is a city full of character, and now it is time to see if its pubs can match the city’s charm.

We hope that you enjoy the pub crawl and let us know what you think via our social media channels.

THE PUBS

CAFÉ 'T POTHUISKE

This pub specialises in craft beers and has a rich history. Its name refers to a time when people would come here to buy hot water. Now times have changed and people come here for something quite different. One unique feature of the pub is a large tree that seems to grow out of the main bar. Additionally, the bar of the pub is very old-fashioned with beautiful golden taps, and it offers beer tasting flights. It is truly the place to be for beer lovers.

IN DE KARKOL

Pub in de Karkol is a classic example of a Dutch café, also known as a brown pub (bruine kroeg). The pub stays true to its historical heritage, displaying numerous photos of Maastricht from the past. Even the beer tap looks as though it has been there since ancient times. The atmosphere this pub creates is cherished by many, which may be why it won the Pub of the Year award in the Netherlands in 2016.

CAFÉ FALSTAFF

Café Falstaff has a more modern design but retains a cosy atmosphere. The bar is decorated with plenty of plants, adding to its warmth. What also sets this bar apart from others is the wide selection of craft beers available. The café boasts over 100 different beers, with 22 on draught, which is one of the reasons it has remained popular for over 25 years. In addition to its unique interior, the café has a large outdoor terrace where you can enjoy a drink on sunnier days.

CAFÉ IN DEN OUDEN VOGELSTRUYS

Café In den Ouden Vogelstruys is a renowned pub in Maastricht. The pub is the oldest in the city. The pub could survive for so long, because it consistently delivers what you would expect from a good old-fashioned Dutch pub. The place is also known as the living room of Maastricht, as many locals frequently visit the pub.

CAFÉ VAN BOMMEL

You will notice that from Café In den Oude Vogelstruys, you will need to return to this pub. The reason is that this spot is the best place to end the evening on a high note. After ten, the furniture is rearranged, and the pub transforms into a lively venue where you can party all night. If you would prefer a quieter atmosphere without louder music, we recommend staying at Café In den Oude Vogelstruys or visiting another pub, like De Dikke Dragoner, which just missed being included on this list.
