KATWIJK AAN ZEE PUB CRAWL

KATWIJK AAN ZEE PUB CRAWL

One of the most well-known coastal towns in the Netherlands, this town is renowned for its down-to-earth residents who remain closely connected to their traditions. It boasts a charming town centre and what many consider to be the most beautiful boulevard in the entire country. Dominating the skyline along this boulevard are two iconic landmarks: the White Church, also known as the Old Church, and the lighthouse called the Vuurbaak. The Vuurbaak is the second-oldest lighthouse still standing in the Netherlands.

Tradition plays a significant role in the rich culture of Katwijk. Key aspects include its fishing heritage, Protestant faith, the Katwijk dialect, and a strong passion for football.

In the town of Katwijk, people don’t talk about Ajax or Feyenoord. The conversation instead centres around Quick Boys, VV Katwijk, or Rijnsburgse Boys. These three clubs compete in the third tier of Dutch football which, due to the lack of promotion to the second division, represents the highest level of the amateur league. Among them, Quick Boys is the most successful and the largest club, making it the most widely supported team in the town. The club is also known for having one of the most unique stadiums in the world, nestled in the middle of the dunes near the coast.

Drinking is another pastime that Katwijkers thoroughly enjoy. The town even has its own whisky brand called ‘Vierboet’, which is also an alternative name for the lighthouse.

We could talk endlessly about the rich culture and history of Katwijk aan Zee, but now it is time to explore the town’s pubs. We hope that you enjoy the FREE pub crawl and let us know what you think via our social media channels.

THE PUBS

Café Jam

The pub crawl will start at Café JAM, formerly known as Café Boeie, and before that, The Albatros. In the past, it was a traditional Dutch pub, but it now has a more modern design. Despite the update, the cosy atmosphere remains. Café JAM often hosts live music events and has a wide selection of craft beers on draught.

Cafe the Pocket

This pub probably has more pool tables than you have ever seen in one place. It used to be a bowling alley, but nowadays it is the go-to spot for a pint and some classic pub sports. You can also play darts or try your hand at snooker. There is plenty of space to sit down and choose a beer from the extensive menu.

Café de Branding

This is a classic example of a traditional Dutch pub. Its most prominent feature is the large terrace, where many people gather on sunny days to enjoy a drink while taking in the view of the main shopping street in Katwijk aan Zee.

Café de Boom

The Lindeboom is one of the oldest pubs in Katwijk aan Zee and has a rich history. It was originally founded by a Belgian and went through several name changes before receiving its current name in 1959, when the daughter and son-in-law of the former owner took over. The son-in-law’s surname was Lindeboom, which then became the name of the pub and has remained so to this day. Even though it is also referred to as, simply, de Boom.

De Blauwe Bock

The best-known pub in Katwijk is De Blauwe Bock, which translates to The Blue Goat. The interior is richly decorated, and mounted on the central wall is a goat’s head, the inspiration behind the pub’s name. Inside, you can also see the large barrels that store the pub’s beer. The Blauwe Bock is also known for its excellent food and a pleasant terrace, which is heated on colder days.
